A guided tour of the central ensemble of Vilnius University

This tour is introductory to the impressive and storied leading ensemble of Vilnius University. You will visit the essential University courtyards, frescoes by R. Gibavičius and P. Repšys in the Faculty of Philology, and the Church of St. John. Visitors can go up to the bell tower during the season with the same guided tour ticket.

A guided tour of St. John's Church and Bell Tower

St. John's Church is the centrepiece of Vilnius University's major ensemble. It hosts the University's main events: the opening and closing of the academic year, the Rector's inauguration, the awarding of diplomas, and other important events. The tour tells the church's history, changes in exterior and interior styles, discusses the most influential personalities. You will visit the most crucial church's chapels and see a church from the side of Pilies St., pointing out details that are usually overlooked. Finally, the guided tour will end at the bell tower of St. John's Church. Visitors can go up to the bell tower during the season with the same guided tour ticket.

During the guided tour, visitors will see various locations in the central ensemble of Vilnius University, which tells a story about the University's symbols. On this tour, you will learn about the disappearance of the Rector's sceptre, why the central figure on the University's coat of arms is the Vytis, who is the author of the motto "Hinc itur ad astra", and other stories. The tour includes a visit to St. John's Church bell tower, the Observatory courtyard, the Small Auditorium and other rooms of the central ensemble.

Women at Vilnius University

Although women only started studying officially at Vilnius University at the beginning of the 20th century, their connection with the academic institution began much earlier. During the tour, you will visit various places in the central ensemble of Vilnius University and the Old Town, which testify to women's involvement in academic life in the 18th and 19th centuries through medicine, patronage, salon culture, and other areas. Also, you will get to know the challenges faced by women who studied and worked at the university in the 20th century.

The duration of the tour is 1.5-2 hours.

Baroque at Vilnius University

Vilnius University's formation is linked to Baroque culture's activities and the Society of Jesus, which flourished in the late 16th and early 18th centuries. The tour of the university's central campus focuses on Baroque University's various aspects: poetry, visual arts, architecture, warfare, cartography, theatre, plague epidemics, etc. During the tour, you will visit the Library, the Sarbiewski and the Great courtyards, also see the architecture and décor of St. John's Church, the University Theatre Hall and other places.

As other events may take place in the VU ensemble, the Museum reserves the right to adjust the itinerary to consider changes in circumstances slightly. Tour participants will be informed accordingly.
