A guided tour of the central ensemble of Vilnius University

This is an introductory tour of the impressive and storied central ensemble of Vilnius University. Visitors are introduced to the University's main historical events, personalities and the most important sites of the ensemble. The significance of the frescoes by Rimantas Gibavičius and Petras Repšis in the Faculty of Philology is also explained, as well as a visit to the former students' café in the Great Courtyard.

IMPORTANT! Due to the renovation works taking place in the VU ensemble, the Great Courtyard and St. St. John's Church will not be accessible during this tour until June. The route will be supplemented by other VU sites.

A guided tour of St. John's Church

 

St. John's Church is the centrepiece of Vilnius University's major ensemble. It hosts the University's main events: the opening and closing of the academic year, the Rector's inauguration, the awarding of diplomas, and other important events. The tour tells the church's history, changes in exterior and interior styles, discusses the most influential personalities. Visitors will visit the most crucial church's chapels and see a church from the side of Pilies St., pointing out details that are usually overlooked.

Guided tour for young visitors - schoolchildren in grades 1-4

The central Palace of Vilnius University of Applied Sciences, located in the Old Town of Vilnius, hides a number of legends and interesting stories, as well as spectacular mural paintings and architectural works. During the tour, we will hold our heads up high and observe the signs of the old University, try to find out what it took to establish and maintain the new University, and talk about the importance of the University for each one of us. We will look for where everyone can find their zodiac sign in the University, what animals are hiding in Rimtautas Gibavičius' sgraffito "Historical Portraits", and we will see the old Baltic traditions immortalised in the menus of the Philology Faculty.

Vilnius University in the Old Town

Since the foundation of Vilnius University, the university has hosted and taught a wide range of distinguished individuals who have contributed to Lithuania. When we talk about the University, we are not only talking about the old University buildings, but also about the University located in the entire Old Town of Vilnius!

During the tour, you will visit the Alumnate Courtyard, the Adam Mickiewicz Museum, find out where the Vilnius University Clinics used to be, where the University's anatomical hospital used to be located, and learn more surprising stories about the city.

This is a great opportunity to get a closer look at the historical development of both the University and the city of Vilnius.
